Key match-ups in Ashes series

3 minute read

There is a big burden resting on the shoulders of some key players from both Australia and England in the Ashes series that starts at Edgbaston.

THREE KEY SHOWDOWNS THAT WILL DECIDE WHO WINS THE ASHES

David Warner v Jimmy Anderson

Anderson, having claimed a staggering 575 Test scalps, looms as the bowler that will cause Australia more sleepless nights than any other member of England's attack. Not because of frightening pace but his consistency, control and mastery of local conditions. The showdown between the 37-year-old, expected to return from a calf injury in the first Test, and Australia's former vice-captain will be pivotal and pulsating. Anderson is happy to say a few words on the field, while Warner is batting more cautiously than ever.

James Pattinson v Joe Root

England's captain has promoted himself to first drop in an effort to shore up an inexperienced top order, having previously turned down requests to do the same from coach Trevor Bayliss. If the tourists strike with the new ball they will have a golden chance to also remove Root early, which would go a long way to restricting the hosts to a modest score. Pattinson, who has demanded a recall based on his recent form in English conditions, will be fired up and keen to make a point in his first Test since 2016.

Nathan Lyon v Moeen Ali

Australia's offspinner has flown under the radar, especially when compared to the same point in 2017 when he provocatively spoke of Australia wanting to "end the Test careers of some" Englishmen. Lyon will be keen to maintain a sensational record against Moeen, having dismissed his counterpart a record seven out of nine times in the previous series. Moeen, who was dropped during an underwhelming World Cup, will be under pressure to hold up an end with the ball.
