England's fast-bowling crisis has deepened with Mark Wood ruled out of the Ashes series after knee surgery.

The hosts had hoped the right-arm quick, who took the winning wicket to claim the Ashes for England four years ago, would be available for selection for the third Test at Headingley.

Wood suffered a side strain when bowling in last month's World Cup final. But, the problem is a fresh issue for the injury-prone 28-year-old who has endured a stop-start Test career.

The setback comes on the back of Jimmy Anderson's calf injury which had rubbed him out of the England attack after just four overs on Thursday on day one of the series opener at Edgbaston.

Anderson's scans are widely expected to confirm he will miss at least the next two Tests and leave England a bowler down when Australia bat in their second innings in Birmingham.

Jofra Archer, named in the England squad for Edgbaston but not selected, is likely to come in for his Test debut at Lord's in 10 days. He has also been struggling with a side strain.

Fellow Test rookies Olly Stone and Lewis Gregory are in contention for selection as well.
