South Australian stalwart Callum Ferguson has won a Sheffield Shield recall for the Redbacks' game against NSW starting Friday at Adelaide Oval.

South Australia is banking on the return of experienced batsman Callum Ferguson to help blunt NSW's bowlers in their Sheffield Shield game starting Friday.

Ferguson was overlooked for SA's initial two Shield games but has been recalled for the Adelaide Oval fixture.

His top-order nous will be called on with the Blues summoning Test pair Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon to help offset the loss of Steve Smith, David Warner, Mitchell Starc and Sean Abbott to Australian Twenty20 duties.

"He (Ferguson) is just coming off a 90 in the one-dayer and he's the ultimate professional," Redbacks paceman Wes Agar said on Thursday.

"He has prepared really well and he's really excited to be back in the side.

"It's really important to have his experience and wealth of knowledge around the group."

The Blues have won both their Shield games this season while the Redbacks are winless, with a loss and a draw.

NSW have named three possible debutants, with batsmen Matt Gilkes and Daniel Solway and fast bowler Liam Hatcher in their 12-man squad.

Opening batsman Nick Larkin and lefthander Nick Bertus have also received call-ups along with Lyon and Hazlewood, who hasn't played a first-class match since the fifth Ashes Test in mid-September.
