Cameron Green's name has already come up in Australia's selection meetings with the 20-year-old allrounder seen as a Test player of the future.
Rising WA star Cameron Green says he's not ready for a Test call-up just yet despite being firmly on the radar of selectors.
Green will have an MRI scan on Tuesday, seeking clearance on a return to bowling after suffering back soreness earlier this season.
If successful, he will start bowling off a shortened run-up with the hope of getting back to competitive bowling in time for the BBL.
Australia have been searching for an allrounder since Shane Watson's last Test in 2015.
Mitch Marsh has filled in on-and-off but is still to recover from the broken hand suffered while punching a wall in frustration in October.
Green is already being touted as Australia's long-term solution for the role.
Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting suggested the 200cm right-hander should be picked in the extended squad for the upcoming Test series against New Zealand.
And WA veteran Marcus Stoinis reckons Green could become the greatest all-rounder Australia has ever produced.
Green has hit two centuries in this summer's Sheffield Shield, his 394 runs coming at an average of 65.66.
He can also bowl at speed, having claimed 28 first-class wickets at 21.53 including a haul of 5-24 in his Shield debut as a 17-year-old.
"I always say if they are good enough, they are old enough. I don't have an issue with his age," national selector Trevor Hohns said about Green's chances of a Test call-up.
"It's more about whether his body can cope bowling.
"Once that happens we will be keeping a good eye on him because he is a fine up-and-coming player."
But Green doesn't feel like he's yet ready.
"I'm pretty happy just playing for WA at the moment," he said.
"I've only just played a couple of games as a batsman, so I'm definitely not looking that far ahead.
"There's a few guys in the WA squad that should be playing ahead of me. Shaun Marsh has been peeling off runs for fun. I definitely reckon he'll deserve it way ahead of me.
"I may have got a couple of good scores out of the way but I'm definitely a good few years off I'd say."
WA are taking a careful approach with Green to ensure his back soreness doesn't manifest into something more sinister.
Green feared the worst when his felt some pain earlier this season.
"I thought it was pretty serious," he said.
"I've had three or four back injuries in the past that actually didn't hurt while doing everything else apart from bowling.
"This one, my back was actually pretty sore in the field and at home so I actually thought it was going to be a lot worse but the scan actually came up absolutely clear."
