Star allrounder Glenn Maxwell has returned from a mental health break to lead the Melbourne Stars as they embark on their BBL campaign.

Maxwell stepped away from cricket citing mental health issues during Australia's Twenty20 series against Sri Lanka in October.

Australian coach Justin Langer revealed at the time that Maxwell had admitted that he was struggling to enjoy the game after a draining playing schedule in the preceding 12 months.

The Stars confirmed on Thursday that the 31-year-old had joined his teammates for a pre-season camp ahead of their season-opening clash with the Brisbane Heat at Metricon Stadium on December 20.

"We're pleased to see Glenn in green and ready to lead our side with a big season ahead," coach David Hussey said.

"He's an incredible talent and a key part of our club but health and wellbeing comes first and it's important that he's been able to take some time away to focus on that."

Maxwell will speak to reporters for the first time since he stepped away from the game, at a media conference at the MCG on Friday.

The allrounder played two Victorian Premier Cricket matches with club side Fitzroy Doncaster during his break and has taken part in some aspects of Victoria's Sheffield Shield program.

He completed a full session with his teammates for the first time last week ahead of the Vics' clash with Western Australia that was abandoned due to a dangerous MCG pitch.

Victorian batsmen Will Pucovski and Nic Maddinson have also recently taken breaks to deal with mental health issues, but have since returned to the Shield side.
