Snapshot for day one of the second Test between Australia and New Zealand at the MCG.
AUSTRALIA v NEW ZEALAND, SECOND TEST, DAY ONE
Score: Australia 4-257
Summary: After captain Kane Williamson opted to bowl first, New Zealand got off to the perfect start. Trent Boult sent thousands of Black Caps supporters at the MCG into delirium when he bowled Joe Burns with the fourth ball of the day. But Australia steadied after the early hiccup to take day one honours, as Marnus Labuschagne (63) and Steve Smith (77 not out) were amongst the runs again.
Man of the moment: Steve Smith. The former Australia captain hasn't been required to deliver his normal heroics this summer as Labuschagne and David Warner have piled on top-order runs. But another appearance at the MCG, where he has scored centuries in four consecutive Tests, brought about a return to regular service.
Key moment: Labuschagne was cantering towards a fourth-straight century of the summer when he was bowled in bizarre fashion. Starting to build another big partnership with Smith, Labuschagne attempted to leave a Colin de Grandhomme delivery, but instead it deflected off his elbow and cannoned into the stumps.
Stat of the day: Smith overtook Greg Chappell (7110) to move into the top-10 Australian Test run-scorers of all-time.
