Swepson ready to partner 'GOAT' in Sydney

3 minute read

Queensland leg-spinner Mitchell Swepson says it would be an "unbelievable" opportunity to partner "the GOAT" Nathan Lyon in a Test match at the SCG.

Even during the frantic Big Bash League season, Mitchell Swepson kept up his red-ball training with an eye on a Test call-up.

The Queensland leg-spinner will join the Australian squad ahead of next week's third and final Test against New Zealand at the SCG.

Swepson said he had an inkling he would be given an opportunity after being given "some notice" by chief selector Trevor Hohns.

He last played a Twenty20 match on Sunday when he took 2-27 in Brisbane Heat's thumping BBL victory over the Sydney Sixers.

"I've had a couple of sessions where I've been bowling with a red-ball, even during the Big Bash, so that's helped me prepare," he said.

"I've worked hard this year on my bowling and it's great to see the selectors have been watching as well.

"I've been working on being a much more consistent bowler.

"I think every leg-spinner strives for that, it's tough to be nice and consistent as a leggie."

The 26-year-old said it would be an "unbelievable" opportunity to partner with Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon in Sydney.

Despite the SCG traditionally being a spin-friendly pitch, Swepson's only first-class match at the ground came three weeks ago.

"'Gaz' (Lyon) is obviously the GOAT," Swepson said.

"It's been a goal of mine to get to this position to be the second spinner and partner with 'Gaz'.

"I think every spinner in the Shield comp wanted that spot."

Swepson has 110 first-class wickets from 39 matches at an average of 35.31.

He comes into the Australian camp with veteran fast bowler Peter Siddle released from the squad to return to his BBL team, Adelaide Strikers.

Swepson has represented Australia just once - in a Twenty20 outing against England in 2018 - but has been part of two Test tours to India and Bangladesh.

Think. Is this a bet you really want to place?
