Snapshot for day four of the second Test

3 minute read

Snapshot for day four of the second Test between Australia and New Zealand at the MCG.

AUSTRALIA v NEW ZEALAND, 2ND TEST, DAY THREE:

Score: Australia (467 and 5-168 dec) defeat New Zealand (148 and 9-240) by 247 runs.

Summary: Australia already had a matchwinning lead on Sunday, but decided to bat for almost an hour in the morning before declaring. New Zealand put up more resistance in their second innings, almost entirely thanks to a brilliant 121 from opening batsman Tom Blundell. His wicket ended the Test match, holding out to Nathan Lyon off the bowling of Marnus Labuschange, but his knock gave the strong Kiwi crowd something to cheer about. Apart from that, Australia was totally dominant in wrapping up the series.

Man of the moment: James Pattinson. The returning quick ripped the heart out of New Zealand's top-order, dismissing stars Tom Latham, Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor. His comeback to Test cricket is a frightening prospect for teams across the world as he bowls in partnership with Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc.

Key moment: The game would've been over a lot sooner had Australia reviewed an LBW shout on Blundell when he had failed to score. Starc trapped him in front, but Australian captain Tim Paine opted against reviewing the not out decision. From there, Blundell delivered a classy, backs-to-the-wall innings.

Stat of the day: Blundell becoming the first Kiwi to score a Test century at the MCG.

Think. Is this a bet you really want to place?
