Hobart Hurricanes will have to adapt to life without D'Arcy Short after the opener was called up to the Australia one-day squad for January's tour of India.

Short was on Monday night included in the Aussie squad for the three-match series in place of injured quick Sean Abbott.

The 29-year-old found out mere hours before the Hurricanes' rain-hit match against the Melbourne Stars in Launceston, which they lost under the Duckworth-Lewis system.

Short was out for a third-ball duck but it didn't dampen his enthusiasm.

"I'm excited to go over there and hopefully get an opportunity. If I get a go I'll try and take it with both hands," he told reporters.

"It's nice to get the reassurance that you're still being looked at to play one-day cricket, especially with the (T20) World Cup coming up as well."

With skipper Aaron Finch and David Warner locked in as openers, Short has been vocal about his desire to be considered as a middle-order player.

But he ruled out a shift south for the Hurricanes, having topped the Big Bash League run scorers charts as an opener the past two seasons.

"Easy answer? No. I love batting at the top for the Hurricanes. That's where I've had my most success," he said.

In a packed schedule, it's not yet clear how many BBL matches Short will miss. The one-day matches against India are played on January 14, 17 and 19.

"It's a big loss, he's been one of the leading run scorers for a few seasons and that comes with higher honours," Hurricanes captain Ben McDermott said.

"If you do that you're going to get picked for Australia. We're going to miss him but hopefully we can fill his hole nicely."

Short's absence will be tempered by the return of Matthew Wade from Test duty.

The Hurricanes have used Caleb Jewell and Simon Milenko as openers alongside Short this summer.
