Sick NZ batsman Raval extends tour of woe

3 minute read

New Zealand batsman Jeet Raval was recalled for the third trans-Tasman Test but his innings ended in dreadful fashion.

New Zealand batsman Jeet Raval's tour of woe extended in odd fashion at the SCG on Sunday with a failed review after he failing to review correctly.

Raval, who has been suffering with the same viral infection that forced Kane Williamson and Henry Nicholls to miss the third Test, will quickly want to move on from his trip to Australia.

The out-of-form batsman's search for his highest first-class score since his 33 in February came unstuck at the SCG, where he was trapped plumb lbw by Nathan Lyon on 31.

International Cricket Council laws dictate that batsmen have 15 seconds to decide whether they will review a dismissal, and that they must make a 'T' sign with both arms.

Raval seemingly failed on both accounts, casually waving one arm at umpire Aleem Dar after a long discussion with stand-in captain Tom Latham.

A couple of fielders appeared to question Raval's referral technique and/or how long he took.

However, the ball-tracking replay showed it was a moot point given the visitors had just wasted a review.

The 31-year-old Raval had a decent excuse for the amateur moment given he was unwell and had been put in isolation by team medicos.

Raval had looked in control on Sunday, relative to his health and previous knocks on tour, but his wicket triggered a collapse of 3-28.

The left-handed batter was a contentious selection at the top of the order in Perth, then dropped for the Boxing Day Test after averaging 7.3 from his past nine Test innings.

The Black Caps didn't have another reserve batsman in the touring party, so Raval was recalled for the series finale after both Williamson and Nicholls fell ill.

Think. Is this a bet you really want to place?
