AUSTRALIA v NEW ZEALAND, THIRD TEST, DAY THREE:

Score: Australia 454 & 0-40, New Zealand 251

Summary: Nathan Lyon snapped a stubborn 68-run opening stand then dropped two return catches offered by Glenn Phillips, who top scored on Test debut with 52. Phillips forced Australia to take the second new ball for the first time this series but couldn't make it to stumps. The Black Caps have bowled on every day of this series and currently trail by 243 runs.

Man of the moment: Lyon's thumb was bloodied and his ego bruised after missing two chances to dismiss Phillips but he bounced back in style. The offspinner bowled with good control throughout the day then cleaned up the tail to finish with a haul of 5-68.

Key moment: Pat Cummins, having been pulled for six by Phillips in the 84th over, disturbed the young batsman's off stump with a cracking delivery in the 88th over.

Stat of the day: It is the first time Lyon has snared a five-wicket haul against New Zealand, and his first five-for in an SCG Test.

Quote of the day: "I don't care how you dress that up, that is some poor running between the wickets. It has cost him his wicket." Former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum wasn't impressed with Colin de Grandhomme's needless dismissal.
