T20 dynamo D'Arcy Short has blasted an unbeaten century to guide Hobart Hurricanes to an eight-run BBL win over Perth Scorchers at Optus Stadium.
A typically destructive D'Arcy Short century has piloted Hobart Hurricanes to an eight-run win over Perth Scorchers in their BBL clash at Optus Stadium.
Short blasted seven sixes in an unbeaten 103 off 70 balls on Sunday, driving Hobart to 2-180 after the visitors won the toss and elected to bat.
The Scorchers crumbled to 3-18 in reply when Scott Boland deflected a return shot at the non-striker's end onto the stumps and had Josh Inglis run out, capping a superb first over in Hurricanes colours after also dismissing Cameron Bancroft.
Mitch Marsh (48) and Cam Green (33) steadied the ship and Jhye Richardson smashed a quickfire 31 not out but the early damage proved insurmountable.
Hobart's third win for the season lifted them to fifth but paceman Riley Meredith joined a growing injury list.
Meredith played no further part after bowling two overs and the Hurricanes confirmed he had sustained a side strain.
Batsman David Miller (calf tightness) was also sidelined as a precaution.
Star allrounder James Faulkner suffered a calf tear on Friday night which will sideline him for up to a month, while Short will miss Hobart's next five games after he was added to Australia's one-day international squad to tour India.
Short was dropped five times before reaching his century - the first by any batsman for the season - with a six off the final ball of the innings.
Recalled Scorchers allrounder Tim David copped jeers after spilling two straightforward chances in the deep, while Ashton Agar and Richardson both also shelled tough chances.
"It's always good to do well against your mates and have something over them for a bit," Short said of his West Australian teammates.
"I was feeling a bit scratchy to start with, and at the start of the season, but I'm feeling good now."
Short's ton made him just the fourth batsman, alongside Luke Wright, Usman Khawaja and Craig Simmons, to post multiple BBL centuries.
The leading run-scorer in the previous two BBL seasons, Short unleashed late in the innings as the Hurricanes plundered 76 runs off the final five overs.
Opening partner Caleb Jewell chipped in with 25 and Ben McDermott finished 20 not out.
The Scorchers face Melbourne Renegades in Geelong on Tuesday and will hope to welcome back Ashton Turner from illness after falling to seventh on the ladder.
"That's a really good pitch, probably a par score and a score we should have really chased down I think," Agar said.
"Their advantage was they had a set batter in at the end ... they timed their run really nicely."
