Monkey scratches batsman from World Cup

3 minute read

Promising Australian under-19 batsman Jake Fraser-McGurk is being sent home from the World Cup in South Africa after being scratched in the face by a monkey.

A scratch from a monkey has caused promising Australian batsman Jake Fraser-McGurk to be sent home from the under-19 World Cup.

Fraser-McGurk's mishap happened at a nature reserve in South Africa following Australia's win against England last Thursday in Kimberley.

"I guess it serves me right for getting too close to the animal enclosure, that is a lesson learned," he said.

The 17-year-old Victorian, touted as one of the county's most promising young batsmen, was ruled out of playing in Australia's quarter-final loss to India early Wednesday (AEDT).

After the loss, Australia has two more matches to play to determine its ranking at the next under-19 World Cup tournament.

Fraser-McGurk will receive medical treatment in Australia over the next seven days.

Cricket Australia medico Alex Kountouris was confident Fraser-McGurk would soon recover.

"We want to make sure that Jake doesn't have any ongoing medical concerns as a result of the incident so we have taken the best course of action," Kountouris said.

"This involves the player returning to Australia for the treatment required within the recommended seven days of the incident taking place.

"We expect Jake will be available for selection shortly after he has completed the treatment."
