Gifted but luckless Will Pucovski has added to his tally of concussions, suffering a freak accident while attempting a run for a Cricket Australia XI.

Captaining the team on his 22nd birthday, Pucovski's bat stuck in the turf as he tried to make his ground during the one-day match against England Lions at Gold Coast's Metricon Stadium.

He fell forward, landing heavily and striking his head on the ground.

He failed a concussion test and was ruled out of the rest of the match, replaced by Xavier Crone. Concussion protocols means he is unavailable for the second game on Tuesday.

"I remember what happened. The bat got stuck, I went tumbling over and smacked my head on the ground pretty hard. It was a bit unfortunate," Pucovski said.

"I am not too bad, a bit on and off. I should be back in action pretty quickly."

One of Australia's brightest cricket prospects, batsman Pucovski has a history of concussions which have hindered his career, along with a battle with mental illness.

He was close to making his Test debut against Pakistan early in the summer before withdrawing from a CA XI match against the tourists citing mental health issues.
