Tasmanian bowlers shared the spoils to put the visitors into a strong position before South Australia struck back in the Sheffield Shield.

Veteran quick Peter Siddle did the early damage before Beau Webster mopped up the tail as Tasmania enjoyed the best of day one in their Sheffield Shield clash with South Australia.

By stumps the Tigers had ceded some of their advantage, stumbling to 2-14 after bowling the Redbacks out for 195.

Tasmania's new recruit Peter Siddle (2-30, 18 overs) was frugal and always a threat while the versatile Webster (3-26), who can bowl spin and medium pace, did the damage with the latter.

Two-metre batting allrounder Webster only added medium pace to his repertoire in the off-season as Tasmania sought a fifth bowling option who could get a bit more bite off the deck at their Bellerive home.

"The more I bowl in a game, the more experience I am going to get and the more consistency," Webster said.

"I'm just looking to do a role; it might be just a holding role while we've got Sidds (Siddle) or Jacko (Bird) doing their thing.

"But today I got a bit of reward late and got a few wickets there."

Nathan Ellis (2-38) and Jackson Bird (2-47) also chipped in for the Tigers.

Australian captain Tim Paine pouched a splendid diving catch to remove Brad Davis (5) and looked in good form behind the stumps after his double failures with the bat against Queensland.

Jake Weatherald (4) couldn't add to his first-round century while Henry Hunt (30) and Callum Ferguson (29) both got starts before being dismissed.

Harry Nielsen saved SA's blushes with a patient 64 off 164 balls before being bowled by Bird as he sought some late runs with his side already nine wickets down.

The visitors got off to a rough start in reply.

Jordan Silk was dismissed lbw to Chadd Sayers for a duck in the first over of their innings and when fellow opener Alex Doolan (6) was caught behind by Harry Nielsen off the bowling of Kane Richardson, the Tigers were sweating on stumps.

Both sides will be eager for wins after outright losses in their opening round clashes.
