Allrounder Marcus Stoinis will have scans after suffering a side injury in Australia's first ODI against India.

Cameron Green could debut for Australia on Sunday after fellow allrounder Marcus Stoinis hurt his side while bowling in the ODI series opener against India.

Stoinis appeared to be in serious discomfort after delivering the second ball of his seventh over at the SCG on Friday night.

The 31-year-old trudged off the field for treatment and will soon have scans of his side.

Team management described Stoinis' withdrawal from the action as precautionary but the short turnaround before the second ODI means he could be an enforced omission.

Green and veteran allrounder Moises Henriques would be the leading candidates to replace Stoinis in the XI, although selectors may opt to bolster their attack by calling up bowling allrounder Sean Abbott.

Mitch Marsh isn't in the limited-overs squad as he is still recovering from an ankle injury.

Stoinis was comfortably Australia's most economical bowler prior to limping off the field during India's chase.

Uncapped 21-year-old Green was picked in both Australia's white-ball and Test squads.

The West Australian only recently returned to the bowling crease, having played as a batsman for most of the past year while recovering from a back stress fracture, but has made a big impression on coach Justin Langer.

"He's a young fast bowler, he's 200cm, we're very sensitive to his physical health, particularly as he's had two stress fractures," Langer said earlier this week.

"He's up and running, bowling well and certainly giving us another option at the selection table."
