Sixers rout Renegades in lopsided BBL game

3 minute read

The Sydney Sixers have thrashed the Melbourne Renegades by 145 runs, headlined by 95 from 57 balls from young gun Josh Philippe.

Young gun Josh Philippe has blasted his best white-ball score as the Sydney Sixers thrashed the Melbourne Renegades by 145 runs, the biggest win in Big Bash League history.

Opening the batting, Philippe hit 95 from 57 balls at Blundstone Arena on Sunday night as his side posted 4-205.

In reply, the Renegades were routed for 60 in less than 11 overs - the second lowest BBL score after their 57 in 2014-15.

Philippe pulled out a full array of shots after being given a chance on 24 when Beau Webster dropped a return chance off his own bowling.

The highly rated 23-year-old was out agonisingly short of a century in the final over.

It was the highest score by a Sixers batsman in the tournament's decade-long history.

"I feel like I've been hitting in the nets for so long, it's nice to get some competitive games," Philippe said.

"It's really hard to judge what sort of form you're in, in the nets."

The Renegades chase got off to a horror start, with skipper Aaron Finch one of four to go cheaply in the first five overs

Quick Ben Dwarshuis was the chief destroyer, claiming 3-6 in his opening two-over spell before finishing with four wickets.

After the early collapse, Melbourne decided to chase a bonus point which is awarded to the team with the most runs at the comparative 10-over mark.

"It got worse because of our execution when we tried to go for that point," coach Michael Klinger said.

"One of the discussions was 'is a point more important or is net run-rate?' Obviously we got neither."

Philippe was earlier backed up by Jordan Silk, who freed the arms late and finished unbeaten on 45 from 19 which included five fours off one Kane Richardson over.

One Silk leg-side heave off Josh Lalor ended up on top of the Ricky Ponting grandstand.

Defending champions Sydney and the Renegades are both 1-1 to start the season.

Spinner Peter Hatzoglou was one bright spot for the Renegades after an eye-catching debut on Saturday night, claiming another two scalps.
