NOTABLE AUSTRALIAN TEST CRICKETERS TO DEBUT AGED 21 OR YOUNGER

* Pat Cummins (18)

Debuted eight months after his first game for NSW. Earned man-of-the-match honours after an epic contest in Johannesburg but injury woes meant he had to wait six years to play a second Test.

* Phillip Hughes (20)

Became the youngest player to score a century in a Sheffield Shield final and in just his second Test, became the youngest man to score a century in each innings. Tipped to become a 100-Test player.

* Ricky Ponting (20)

Rod Marsh, then coach of the national academy, labelled him the best teenage batsman he had seen. Went on to score 41 Test tons and captain the country during a golden era.

* Steve Waugh (20)

Debuted in 1985 but the first of his 32 Test hundreds didn't come until the 1989 Ashes tour. Played 168 Tests, spearheading a record-breaking streak of 16 wins.

* Don Bradman (20)

The greatest batsman of all time was dropped after scores of 18 and one on Test debut. Finished with a batting average of 99.94 that will likely remain unparalleled.
