Aussie opening questions remain

Australia's new opening partnership was unconvincing in a 16-run stand against India on day two of the first Test in Adelaide.

Joe Burns' run of outs has continued while his makeshift partner Matthew Wade offered few answers to Australia's opening batting questions.

Burns and Wade both made eight before dismissed by Indian paceman Jasprit Bumrah on Friday in the first Test in Adelaide.

Both openers were trapped lbw; both unsuccessfully reviewed their verdicts; and both did little to solve Australia's conundrum at the top of the order.

Wade and Burns mustered just 16 runs from 14.1 overs in an unconvincing opening stand on day two of the Adelaide Test.

Wade was promoted to the opening slot in the absence of the injured David Warner, who is in doubt to return from a groin injury in the Boxing Day Test.

The lefthander's eight runs came from 51 balls as he curtailed his natural attacking instincts and was twice struck by short balls.

Wade preferred to let two balls hit him just above the elbow rather than play a shot - leaving Australian Test great turned Fox Sports commentator Shane Warne incredulous.

"I don't like that, it's got to hurt," Warne said after Wade allowed a Umesh Yadav delivery to hit him just above his right elbow.

Wade later repeated the act against Bumrah.

"If that gets your elbow, you're in real trouble," Warne said.

Bumrah soon dismissed Wade and added Burns' wicket soon after.

Burns' 41-ball innings extended his lean stretch: he arrived in Adelaide with first-class scores of 0, 1, 4, 0, 10, 11, 29, 0 and seven this season.
