AUSTRALIA v INDIA, FIRST TEST, DAY TWO:

Score: India 1-9 and 244 versus Australia 191.

Summary: India's 62-run lead is set up by a classy bowling performance headed by offspinner Ravi Ashwin's 4-55, his best figures in Australia. Four of Australia's top-five batsmen fail to reach double figures and just two locals - Tim Paine (73no) and Marnus Labuschagne (47) - pass 15.

Man of the moment: Paine. Australia's skipper arrives at the crease with his side in the mire at 5-79 and produces the cliched captain's knock, posting his eighth Test half-century and third-highest Test score to save his nation from complete disaster. Paine and a wagging tail put on 80 valuable runs for the last three wickets.

Key moment: Australia's star batsman Steve Smith spends 45 minutes at the crease and faces 29 balls for just one run. He falls, caught at slip to wily spinner Ashwin, to leave the hosts 3-45 - a position from which they never truly recover.

Stat of the day: Six. The number of catching chances missed by the Indians - five drops and one that slid between wicketkeeper and first slip.

Quote of the day: "With the pink ball, things happen quickly, don't they?" Australian fast bowler Pat Cummins.
