Virat Kohli will be kicking himself after his dismissal to a fired-up Pat Cummins resulted in India crashing to 6-19 on day three of the day-night Test.

Virat Kohli's final knock on tour has ended with a whimper at Adelaide Oval, where Australia seized control of the day-night Test in remarkable fashion.

Kohli became a fired-up Pat Cummins' fourth victim of the innings during a frenetic opening hour on day three.

India resumed at 1-9 on Saturday, leading by 62 runs.

Cummins created scarcely-believable carnage as India crashed to 6-19, putting them at major risk of falling short of the nation's all-time lowest Test total of 42.

Jasprit Bumrah chipped a catch back to Cummins, while Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane and Mayank Agarwal all offered edges that Tim Paine gleefully accepted.

Kohli, who will leave home for the birth of his first child after this game, was also out edging.

India's captain attempted to ease some pressure on the visitors but the mistimed cover drive instead amplified their woes.

Debutant Cameron Green snared a sharp low catch to dismiss Kohli for four.

Kohli's dismissal was briefly delayed as he waited for the third umpire to check it was a clean catch but he eventually trudged off.

"There's very little that the Indians have done wrong. It's been splendid bowling by the Australians," India legend Sunil Gavaskar said on Seven.

"The Indian batsmen have been just that little bit tentative.

"But the bowling has been tremendous."

Kohli scored 74 on day one of the first Test to put the game on India's terms, with momentum having frequently shifted back and forth since.
