The Hobart Hurricanes have overcome a Glenn Maxwell onslaught to secure a 21-run Big Bash League win over the Melbourne Stars at Blundstone Arena.

Maxwell clobbered 70 from 37 balls but it wasn't enough as the Stars fell short of their target of 165 on Saturday night.

The Stars' skipper, who whacked five sixes, had his side well on track for victory but the game turned when he departed in the 14th over top-edging spinner Johan Botha.

Including Maxwell's wicket, Melbourne lost 6-28 as they fell to their third loss in a row.

"We could have been a bit a little bit smarter through that (the chase)," he said.

"Being able to leave it to a bit later knowing it was a pretty good wicket and fast outfield."

Maxwell came to the crease at 2-17 in the third over before showcasing his full repertoire with leg-side flicks and reverse sweeps.

The Stars were a batsman short in the chase after Nic Maddinson bizarrely rolled his ankle in the first over of play.

Maddinson stepped on the boundary rope running to retrieve the ball and was helped from the field.

He was replaced by Lance Morris, one of two bowlers the Stars carried as X-factor substitutes.

"It certainly was a turning point. We were hoping to bowl him (Maddinson) a few overs as well," Maxwell said.

Hobart's Scott Boland finished with figures of 3-22 which included the big scalps of Marcus Stoinis and Nicholas Pooran.

English import Dawid Malan earlier top-scored for the Hurricanes with 75 from 56 as they posted 5-164 after being sent in on their home deck.

Malan, the world's top-ranked Twenty20 batsman, rode some luck and was caught on 54 off a no-ball.

Stars quick Billy Stanlake finished with 3-25 from four overs, which included two wickets in two balls in a power surge over that conceded just two runs.

Stanlake bowled Ben McDermott (31 from 35) and then removed pinch-hitter Nathan Ellis for a golden duck.

Maxwell picked up the wicket of D'Arcy Short, whose underwhelming tournament continued when he dragged a sweep onto his stumps on 12.

South African import Colin Ingram chipped in with a valuable 26 from 12 towards the death but didn't field due to a hip complaint.

The Hurricanes have five wins from seven matches.
