Mitch Marsh controversy mars BBL qualifier

Mitch Marsh's controversial dismissal proved a talking point in the lopsided Big Bash League qualifying final between Sydney Sixers and Perth Scorchers.

Mitch Marsh risked a dissent charge after fuming over the fact he was on the wrong side of the latest decision to reignite the Big Bash League's review debate.

Marsh failed to hide his disbelief and rage at Manuka Oval after being judged caught behind in the BBL qualifying final between Perth Scorchers and Sydney Sixers.

The allrounder appeared to swear, slapped his pad with his bat then shot a dirty look at standing umpire Sam Nogajski.

Former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting was unimpressed with the outburst, noting in Seven's commentary box that Marsh would "have to pay in some way".

"His reaction was over the top and not expected from a senior Australian player," Ponting said.

"I am (concerned he will be suspended), yeah.

"You name another time in the game where you've seen a reaction like that for as prolonged as that was from a batsman. I'm not hoping he does (get suspended) but I reckon he will."

Match referee Bob Stratford is certain to scrutinise the incident, which marred Perth's nine-wicket loss that consigned them to a home semi-final on Thursday.

The incident also prompted a series of fresh calls for BBL sides to be able to refer umpiring decisions.

Big Bash boss Alistair Dobson has already flagged that a review system, which isn't currently used because of the additional cost, is likely to be introduced next season.

That will be little comfort for Perth after Marsh was wrongly given out on two and the Sixers easily hauled in their target of 168.

Think. Is this a bet you really want to place?
