Allrounder Cameron Green has blasted his third century in as many matches for WA, an opening-day Sheffield Shield ton against Queensland at the Gabba.

Western Australia coach Adam Voges has praised Cameron Green's mental toughness after the young Test allrounder continued his scoring blitz with an unbeaten 182 in the Sheffield Shield match against Queensland.

A maiden first-class double ton beckons for 21-year-old Green, who unleashed a withering array of shots, belting 21 fours and four sixes from 258 balls.

Green's seventh first-class century put WA in a commanding position at 3-325 at stumps on day one at The Gabba on Saturday.

It was his third century in the space of eight days following 168no in the shield match against South Australia on February 26 and 144 against the Redbacks in a one-dayer on Tuesday.

"I think his technique allows him to bat for long periods but his mental capacity and desire to bat for long periods is unparalleled for a 21-year-old," Voges said.

"I think that's what makes him so good ... he just wants to keep batting and he's doing it brilliantly well at the moment."

The visitors were on the back foot at 2-16 after being sent in by Bulls skipper Usman Khawaja on Saturday morning, but Green combined with Shaun Marsh (70) to put on a match-turning 226-run partnership.

Hilton Cartwright, who blasted nine fours in his 44, will resume with Green on Sunday.

Earlier, Khawaja's decision to bowl first looked a shrewd one when Jack Wildermuth took two wickets inside the first 10 overs.

Cameron Bancroft was the first to go, caught behind in the fourth over for one run.

The visitors were reeling at 2-16 when Wildermuth removed Sam Whiteman for 13, caught by Marnus Labuschagne at second slip, before Green and Marsh combined to turn the tide in WA's favour.

Marsh was eventually brought undone by Mark Steketee, who coaxed an edge that was well taken by Labuschagne.

Wildermuth finished the day with figures of 2-52 from 18 overs with six maidens.
