AUSTRALIA v ENGLAND, FIRST TEST, DAY FOUR:

Score: England 147 and 297; Australia 425 and 1-20

Result: Australia win by nine wickets.

Summary: Dawid Malan and Joe Root started a promising fightback on day three but England lost 8-74 on Saturday - and with it any hope of avoiding defeat. Australia enjoyed lunch then needed 5.1 overs to haul in a target of 20.

Man of the moment: Nathan Lyon. Celebrated his 400th Test scalp - and ignited England's collapse - with the wicket of Malan. Bagged another three wickets to help quickly clean up the tail.

Key moment: Cameron Green captured the prized scalp of Root, tempting the skipper with a ball on a pinpoint length. Alex Carey gleefully accepted the resultant edge, handing Green the second wicket of his Test career.

Stat of the day: There were 704 days between Lyon's 390th and 400th Test wickets. The previous longest stint in the nervous 390s was Richard Hadlee's 427 days.

Quote of the day: "Write Ben Stokes off at your own peril. He'll be desperate to get back into this series and have a big say in how it all turns out" - Joe Root predicting Stokes will help England fight back after going 1-0 down in the five-Test series.
