Chris Lynn found some touch as the Brisbane Heat threatened to chase down the Melbourne Stars' 207-run total on Monday night at the Gabba.

Some "old school" Chris Lynn was at least something to take out of another frustrating Brisbane Heat loss for captain Jimmy Peirson.

The Heat had the Melbourne Stars 3-16 before a record fourth-wicket Big Bash League stand of 151 between Hilton Cartwright and Joe Clarke rocketed the visitors to 207 at the Gabba.

Lynn (57 off 34) and Ben Duckett (54 off 35) helped the Heat to the Bash Boost point but fell in quick succession just as hopes of a successful chase were firming.

A diving Peirson (2) was run-out when his bat bounced and didn't stay grounded over the crease, the captain cursing his ill-timed dismissal as a crucial moment in the failed chase.

He also took some heat for Liam Guthrie's (1-70) forgettable night, the West Australian now the holder of the BBL's most-expensive figures.

"A lot of bowlers will talk about the graveyard here at the Gabba," he said, lamenting the decision not to swing Guthrie around to bowl from the other end.

"But he's bowled really well, new to the Big Bash this year and it wasn't his night and it's important to get around him.

"All you want to do is put your arm around them but you can't as a keeper."

In Lynn's first half century of BBL11 there was hope though, with the Heat now 2-4 and sixth ahead of a date with the Sydney Sixers on Wednesday.

"He batted with responsibility, took it deeper and he's building quite nicely," Peirson said.

"He's thinking about his cricket and building nicely into a tightly congested couple of games.

"Early on there he cleared his front leg and drop kicked it to the scoreboard and that was old school Lynny."

Peirson said he was learning plenty, having taken over from Lynn as full-time captain this season.

"That's the cross you bear as captain, sometimes (a decision) doesn't go your way and I'm certainly learning that this year," he said.

"But we have the cattle ... there's a couple not lifting their weight, me included."
