Scott Boland has been cleared to continue bowling after a painful mishap immediately before tea on day three at the SCG.

In-form Australian paceman Scott Boland has been cleared of serious injury after a painful tumble on the SCG pitch.

Boland stumbled in his follow through when he bowled the last ball before tea on day three of the fourth Ashes Test.

The Victorian's elbow jammed into his right side as he fell.

Boland was in plenty of discomfort, with teammates and English batter Jonny Bairstow checking on his welfare.

He left the venue to have a scan after the mishap.

Australian team staff were looking at images of the injured area on their computers in the dressing room half an hour later..

The second-gamer quickly returned to the SCG and was back in the nets, with medicos confident there is no serious damage.

While Boland did not bowl before stumps, coach Justin Langer said he would rejoin the attack when needed.

"He was actually alright to bowl tonight," Langer said.

"Thankfully there are no fractures. He's going to be sore in the cartilage between his ribs, but hopefully he'll be right to bowl ... tomorrow morning, but in the second innings definitely.

Earlier, Boland claimed the prized scalp of Joe Root to extend a remarkable start to his Test career.

Boland had figures of 2-0 from four overs at lunch in Sydney, while he snared second-innings figures of 6-7 to help Australia retain the urn with victory in the third Test at the MCG where he was named man of the match on debut.
