Stuart Broad says he doesn't plan on this summer being his Ashes farewell as he eyes the chance to play an eighth series against Australia in 2023.

Australia could still have to contend with their arch-nemesis with the Dukes ball in 2023, with Stuart Broad taking inspiration from Jimmy Anderson in a bid to play on into the next Ashes.

Broad climbed to second in England's all-time Ashes wicket-takers list on Thursday, with his 5-101 at the SCG the first five-wicket haul by a tourist this summer.

At 35, many have thought that this summer could be the last the Australian team sees of Broad.

That would likely be welcome news to Australia's top order, after Broad's 23 wickets terrorised left-handers in the 2019 Ashes - with David Warner, in particular, a victim.

But with new-ball partner Anderson now in his 40th year, Broad sees no reason why he can't continue on to 2023 and loom as a threat again to Australia's left-handers.

"Is it realistic? Yeah, absolutely," Broad said.

"Jimmy is 39, 40 in the summer. He is his probably the most professional I've seen him in the past two years.

"That set a guideline of how to approach at that age.

"We talk a lot and he is so inspiring on the way he is focused on delivering.

"I saw a stat somewhere, Jimmy's record since he turned 35 averaging 21 or something? Why can't I replicate it?

"I'm not as skilful as Jimmy ... But I feel like I've got the motivation and the drive ... And I feel like I can contribute as as much as Jimmy has."

Either Sydney or Hobart is likely to at least be the last time Anderson and Broad play together in Australia.

Since the pair's first game together in 2008, they have played 126 Tests together for 940 wickets.

Together, the pair have won Ashes series together in 2009, 2010-11, 2013 and 2015.

Incredibly the duo were both left out of England's team for the first Test at the Gabba this summer, while Sydney marks the first time they have paired up with speedster Mark Wood.

"He (Anderson) is great to be around and hopefully I get to play more Test cricket with him," Broad said.

"Because we had a lot of fun out there today with Woody.

"It has been a pleasure over the 151 Tests, however many I have played with Jim, and they will continue to be."
