Adam Scott says playing the closing rounds under par at the Honda Classic will leave him feeling satisfied with his quest to rediscover top form.

Playing only his fourth event since October, he will enter the third round of the US PGA Tour event in Florida a distant eight shots off the pace.

Queenslander Scott struggled during a two-over-par 72 on a windy second round at the difficult PGA National course to drop to five over, while big-hitting Americans Luke List (66) and Jamie Lovemark (69) set the pace at three under.

"It's pretty hard to get rhythm out there; it's just brutal," Scott said.

"I played well. It's very difficult to score because you can't put a foot wrong on this course."

Having plummeted down the world rankings to No.58, the 2016 Honda Classic winner Scott has set his sights on salvaging a respectable finish.

The 37-year-old believes that would be a good indicator he's getting closer to recapturing the form which has seen him hold the world No.1 spot.

"A good result is always nice, but if I was just to go under par for the weekend rounds it'd be great because this is a tough examination of where I'm at," Scott said.

"I'm pleased with what I've seen; I've hung in there and my form is getting better, despite the scores not reflecting that."

Scott and Greg Chalmers (71) were thrown a lifeline when tough conditions saw the 36-hole cut blow out to five over, allowing the Australian duo to sneak in on the number.
