Tiger Woods says he is close to firing on all cylinders after making a respectable start to the US PGA Tour's Memorial Tournament in Ohio.

The sporting world is waiting to see if Woods can equal the US PGA Tour's all-time winning record this week at Muirfield Village Golf Club, where he has won five times.

Woods, whose recent Masters win at Augusta National was his 81st PGA Tour title, can equal Sam Snead's record 82 victories this week.

Woods has not played since missing the cut at the US PGA Championship in New York two weeks ago.

The PGA Championship was Woods' first event after a month-long rest following his victory at Augusta in April, his 15th major title.

However, Woods posted a two-under-par 70 during the first round of the Memorial to sit five shots off the pace with day one play still underway.

Ryan Moore posted the clubhouse lead of seven under courtesy of a hot 65 and he leads three-time major winner Jordan Spieth (66) by one.

Woods began Thursday on the 10th hole at the Nicklaus-designed Muirfield Village Golf Club and made the turn in one under.

He mixed three birdies with a bogey on the front nine (his back nine) to sit two under the card.

But the former world No.1 says he can feel lower scores coming this week.

"I was close to being easily a few more under par. It was soft enough, it was gettable but I just didn't quite do it," Woods said after his round.

"I had a couple loose iron shots. But if you look at the scores, they're all getting after it today. I was close to being out there with them."

Woods' five Memorial victories include a run where he won three in a row starting with 1999.

He also has three other top-four results at the prestigious invitational event.
