SNAPSHOT OF THE US PGA CHAMPIONSHIP FIRST ROUND AT TPC HARDING PARK:

LEADERBOARD: Jason Day, Brendon Todd (65); Scottie Scheffler, Martin Kaymer, Xander Schauffele, Bud Cauley, Zach Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Justin Rose, Brendan Steele, MikeLorenzo-Vera (66).

AUSTRALIANS: Day (65); Adam Scott (68); Marc Leishman (70), Matt Jones (70); Cameron Smith (71); Lucas Herbert (73).

PLAYER OF THE ROUND: Jason Day. Carded five birdies and no bogeys for a 65, his best opening round by two shots at the US PGA Championship.

SHOT OF THE ROUND: Golfers often lose their head but it's not often they lose the head of their driver. Bryson DeChambeau's unprecedented swing speed caused the shaft in his driver to snap shortly after his tee shot at the seventh hole. He was entitled to a replacement under the rules.

STAT OF THE ROUND: Day carded a bogey-free round at a major championship for the first time since the third round of the 2017 Open Championship. This after Day led all golfers for most bogey-free major rounds from 2010 to 2016.

QUOTE OF THE ROUND: "It's still funny ... hearing '99, 2000, 2006, 2007 PGA champion, Tiger Woods.' And then there's nothing. That's pretty interesting. That's definitely different." - Rory McIlroy on Woods getting introduced on the first tee with no crowds.

TOURNAMENT SUMMARY: Day has offered hope of ending Australia's five-year major drought for men, while a stack of big names are chasing including two-time defending champion Koepka, Germany's former PGA Championship winner Kaymer, two-time major winner Johnson and fellow former world No.1 Rose. Woods and Scott are also in the mix. Jordan Spieth, in his latest bid to become the sixth person to complete golf's career Grand Slam with victories in all four major championships, opened with a three-over 73.
