The Australian Open golf tournament will be played in November after the 2020 edition was cancelled due to the pandemic, with The Australian GC again hosting.

After last year's COVID-forced absence, the Australian Open golf tournament will return in November and the venue is good news for Matt Jones.

The Australian Golf Club in Sydney will host the championship from November 25-28, with the event relocated from Melbourne's Kingston Heath.

The Australian hosted the 2019 tournament, which was won by Jones, a member of the club, who also lifted the Stonehaven Cup there in 2015 when he held off world No.1 Jordan Spieth.

The tournament was postponed from November 2020 to February this year, and then cancelled because of difficulties posed by the pandemic - the first time it hadn't been played since 1904 outside the two World Wars.

The 2021 edition will be played the week before the Australian PGA Championship at Royal Queensland, giving the PGA Tour of Australasia a two-week block of world-class golf.

Golf Australia chief executive James Sutherland was excited to confirm the dates for the 105th edition.

"The Open has been a focal point of the Australian summer for decades and we're extremely pleased to bring it back," Sutherland said.

"It was tough for all involved to miss out last year, particularly for players without their national championship on offer and for fans who simply want to see the best golf has to offer."
