Australian golfer Lucas Herbert is set to crown the best year of his career by securing his full US PGA Tour card.

Australian golfer Lucas Herbert has all but secured his US PGA Tour card with an equal-fourth-place finish at the Boise Open in Idaho.

Herbert carded a final-round five-under-par 66 to fall two shots shy of forcing a playoff with American winner Greyson Sigg, who finished 19 under for the tournament.

The event was the first of three Korn Ferry Tour Finals, with the top 25 at the end of the post-season series to gain full playing rights to the 2021-22 wraparound PGA Tour.

Beginning the final round in a share of 12th place, Herbert had four birdies and two bogeys on the front nine.

Needing a late surge to put himself in the frame for a PGA Tour card, birdied the par-3 13th, sparking a run that included birdies at 15, 16 and 18.

"I am just thrilled," said Herbert, who played six regular-season PGA Tour events this year with a best finish a tie for 18th at The Memorial Tournament.

The realisation of Herbert's PGA Tour dream came just a day after what would have been Jarrod Lyle's 40th birthday.

Herbert is a Challenge ambassador and sported his Leuk the Duck headcover at Hillcrest Country Club throughout the tournament.

With two finals events remaining, Aaron Baddeley will need to post a high finish after he ended week one in a tie for 48th.

West Australian Curtis Luck tied for 79th.

PGA Tour officials say Herbert's joint fourth will "most likely" be enough for the Victorian to gain his 2021-22 card to the world's most lucrative tour.

Herbert has already won twice on the European Tour and cracked the world's top 50 for the first time after taking out last month's Irish Open.

The 25-year-old is Australia's fourth highest-ranked player behind Cameron Smith, Adam Scott and Marc Leishman.
