Greyhound racing to get $4m boost in Vic

Victoria's greyhound racing industry will get a $4 million boost if Labor wins the state election.

Greyhound racing in Victoria will get a $4 million boost to up prize money and upgrade tracks and facilities if Labor wins the state election.

In an announcement on Thursday night the government promised to boost prize money by $1 million and put $3 million towards improving facilities over two years if re-elected in November.

"This investment will help support Victorians working in greyhound racing in suburbs, regional cities and country towns right across the state," Racing Minister Martin Pakula said.

The plan would maintain the "very best quality" of racing and would attract more investment for breeding, rearing and training.

The chair of Greyhound Racing Victoria Bernie Carolan backed the plan.

"This additional prize money will allow us to invest more funding across Victoria to deliver strong animal welfare outcomes, more infrastructure improvements and greater support for participants in the suburbs and regional communities," Mr Carolan said.
