The wait for improved conditions at the Pipe Masters in Hawaii continues with a third lay day delaying the start of Australian Julian Wilson's world title tilt.

World No.2 Wilson is one of three men in contention to be crowned world champion at the season-ending event at Pipeline but again organisers have put the action on hold, due to a decreasing swell and gusty winds.

"Unfortunately, the wind and the conditions are not great today..." World Surf League commissioner Kieren Perrow said.

"We will not be on today. We will come back tomorrow morning."

Event officials will make another call on whether to commence competition on Wednesday at 0430 AEDT.

Wilson sits on 51,450 points, level with Felipe Toledo and just 4750 points behind leader Gabriel Medina, after 11 events.

The 30-year-old Wilson would be crowned world champion with a victory at the famous Banzai Pipeline surf break if Medina fails to make the final.

A place in the final would also hand Wilson the title if Brazilian Medina fails to make the semi-finals and his countryman Toledo does not win the event.
