Retired surfing great Mick Fanning has signed a 10-year contract that is billed as a lifetime deal.

Fanning signed the new contract on Wednesday night in Sydney, nearly a year after he announced his retirement from competition.

It continues the three-time world champion's relationship with Rip Curl, which has backed him for the last two decades.

Rip Curl marketing chairman Neil Ridgway called Fanning the most important surfer in the company's history.

"So we decided to lock the deal down for life, basically," he added.

Fanning quit the world tour after last year's Bells Beach event, where he finished runner-up.

He has several business interests as well as maintaining a high profile in surfing.
