Aussie men and women in water polo finals

3 minute read

Australia's men's and women's national water polo teams have progressed to their respective finals at the World League Inter Continental Cup.

Australia's men and women will both be playing in the finals of the World League Inter Continental Cup in Perth after comfortable semi-final wins on Saturday.

The men's Sharks defeated Canada 14-7 to set-up a showdown with Japan - who they defeated in a penalty shootout in group play earlier this week.

The Stingers overcame China 12-8 to advance to a decider against Olympic champions and world No.1 USA.

The Sharks led 8-4 at halftime against Canada and went on with the job after the main break.

"The team's really starting to gel again like we were last year and we're looking forward to the final," Australia goalkeeper Anthony Hrysanthos said.

The Stingers had a tougher time of it against China but used a strong start to keep their opponents at arm's length.

" The Chinese always give it to us really aggressively, so it was really good that we came away with a solid win," Stingers goalkeeper Gabriella Palm said.

Both finals will be played on Sunday.

The Inter Continental Cup acts as a qualifying tournament for the World League Super Final, with both Australian teams advancing to the event in June.
