Technology to foil AFL ticket scalpers

3 minute read

AFL fans will be among the first to trial a new ticket technology next year that will prevent scalpers from reselling the same seat a number of times.

New technology will be in place to foil ticket scalpers at major sports and music events in Australia by next year.

Digital tickets will be trialled at AFL games at Marvel Stadium and Perth Stadium. Ticket holders will be able to tap into grounds using their smartphone as they pass the turnstiles.

Ticketmaster will use "Safetix" technology that changes the barcode every 15 seconds, making it impossible for scalpers to resell the same seat.

"We've designed this thing out of the gate to scale to the largest venues in the ecosystem and the AFL certainly falls into that category," Ticketmaster chief product officer Justin Burleigh told The Herald-Sun on Wednesday.
