NSW Police urge NRL fans to behave

3 minute read

NSW Police will run a high-visibility operation at the weekend's NRL grand final, with fans urged to keep the rivalry family-friendly and behave responsibly.

Police are reminding NRL fans to behave themselves at the weekend's grand final, warning that troublemakers at the decider will be "dealt with swiftly".

Up to 80,000 spectators are expected to descend on ANZ Stadium when the Sydney Roosters take on the Canberra Raiders on Sunday night.

Police say they will run a high-visibility operation involving general duties and specialist officers, and help from a large number of security guards.

"Those who choose to do the wrong thing will be dealt with swiftly, which may very well include criminal charges, fines, ejection from the ground and/or banning notices," Assistant Commissioner Peter Thurtell said in a statement on Friday.

"We want everyone to enjoy themselves and celebrate their competitive spirit, but we will not tolerate antisocial behaviour or any activity that disrupts the match for other spectators and jeopardises safety."

Mr Thurtell told fans at the stadium to watch their possessions and be aware of their surroundings and reminded those celebrating across the state to drink responsibly and know their limits.

"Excessive alcohol consumption can turn anyone into an offender or victim of crime so keep an eye on your mates and think before you drink," he said.

People going to the game are urged to plan their trip and use public transport, while those intending to drive should book their parking in advance and expect significant delays.
