Bailey, Carmichael advance in France surf

3 minute read

Soli Bailey and Wade Carmichael have escaped elimination to join nine other Australian surfers in the sudden-death rounds of the WSL's France Pro.

Australian surfers Soli Bailey and Wade Carmichael have booked their places in the Round of 32 at the World Surf League's France Pro.

Bailey's score of 11.07 beat Brazilian Caio Ibelli's 8.43 and Deivid Silva's 4.30 in the elimination round in shifty, four to six-metre foot peaks at La Graviere in southwest France on Saturday.

The New South Welshman's best wave was late - an underneath-the-lip takeoff into a double-section righthand barrel that earned him an 8.17 from the judges.

Bailey will take on America's world No.4 Kolohe Andino in the next round.

Fellow Australian Carmichael also advanced with his 8.80 enough to see him join American Connor Coffin (14.27) in the Round of 32, while New Zealander Ricardo Christie (6.33) was third.

The Avoca local was on just 1.30 at the halfway point but he managed to freefall into a split-second righthand barrel for a 3.77 score.

Not long after Carmichael dropped into a similar-looking righthand tube but this time he rode it out to find daylight before hitting the crumbling lip with a big top turn for a score of 5.03.

Carmichael has booked a one-on-one with Brazilian Willian Cardoso in the Round of 32.

He and Bailey join fellow Australians Owen Wright, Ryan Callinan, Julian Wilson, Jack Freestone and Ace Buchan in the next round.

Wright faces Hawaiian Ezekiel Lau, Callinan will surf against Brazilian Michael Rodrigues, Wilson takes on Frenchman Jorgann Couzinet, Freestone is up with Japan's Kanoa Igarashi and Buchan faces Coffin.

In the women's draw four Australians have made the Round of 16 - Macy Callaghan, Keely Andrew, Sally Fitzgibbons and Nikki Van Dijk.

Callaghan will surf against Hawaiian Malia Manuel, Andrew faces Brazilian Tatiana Weston-Webb, Fitzgibbons takes on New Zealand's Paige Hareb while Van Dijk is up against American Caroline Marks.
