Australian boxer Andrew Moloney has won the interim WBA super flyweight world title with a TKO after his fight with US-based boxer Elton Dharry was stopped.

Australian boxer Andrew Moloney has won the interim WBA super flyweight world title with a TKO after his fight with US-based boxer Elton Dharry was stopped due to an eye injury.

Fighting at Melbourne's Margaret Court Arena following the "Code War" between Barry Hall and Paul Gallen, which ended in a draw, the fight was stopped one second into the ninth round.

Dharry's right eye started to swell early in the fight and was checked three times by the doctor before the referee ended the fight on his advice with Moloney awarded a TKO win.

The current WBA super flyweight champion Briton Khalid Yafai is expected to line up for a unification fight in January which means the WBA world title will go to Moloney.

"I would have loved a more spectacular finish and knock him out and win more convincingly but I've got his belt so I can't be too upset," Moloney said.

The 28-year-old, who trains under former Danny Green cornerman Angelo Hyder, remains unbeaten after 21 fights.

The loss was the first for Dharry, who is from Guyana but lives in Brooklyn, in more than a decade.

He did some damage in the fifth when he burst Moloney's ear drum which affected the Melbourne fighter's balance.

"I still knew where I was and was smart enough to get behind my jab," Moloney added.

"I thought I was going really well until he popped my ear drum and that wasn't a good round but otherwise I felt in control and things were going to plan."

His twin brother Jason Moloney also took a step towards another world title crack with a brutal second round knockout victory over Nicaraguan Dixon Flores to retain his WBA Oceania bantamweight title earlier in the night.
