Small waves have forced organisers to call successive lay days at the season-ending World Surf League women's event in Maui.

Tyler Wright's return to World Surf League action after 17 months has been put on hold for at least two more days due to poor conditions at the season ending Maui Pro.

On Monday, event organisers were forced to delay the start of competition until at least Wednesday due to small surf at Honolua Bay.

"We are off today and tomorrow. The swell isn't really getting in the bay," Jessi Miley-Dyer, WSL VP of tours and competition, said.

However, action may not commence until the weekend.

"Looking forward, we have hopes for waves at the end of the wek but definitely the first week of December," the WSL tweeted.

The next call will be made on Wednesday at 7.30am (Thursday 0430 AEDT).

Two-time world champion Wright will finally return to competition after her recovery from illness when she faces American title contender Lakey Peterson and Brazil's Silvana Lima in her round one heat.

The last time Australian Wright competed in the Maui Pro was in 2017 when she claimed her second world title.

The final event of the women's season will decide the 2019 world champion with Peterson, series leader Carissa Moore of Hawaii and American Caroline Marks in contention.
