A man has died on Thursday afternoon after he was taken to hospital on Wednesday night following a shooting near Geelong.

A man has died in hospital on Thursday afternoon after he was shot on Wednesday night, which sparked an investigation by Victorian homicide detectives.

The 34-year-old Lara man had been taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries after emergency services responded to reports of the shooting in Lara near Geelong around 6pm..

Police said the investigation is ongoing and homicide detectives are now investigating the scene.

Two 29-year-old women who were assisting police have been released, along with a 35-year-old man who was arrested at the scene for unrelated matters.

Police have urged possible witnesses or anybody with information to contact Crime Stoppers.
