Lilley sails into Finn Gold Cup medal hunt

3 minute read

Finn sailor Jake Lilley has forced his way into the top 10 of the world championship series in Melbourne ahead of Saturday's medal race.

Jake Lilley has found form in familiar waters to earn a berth in Saturday's Finn Gold Cup and lock up a spot for Australia in the sailing class at next year's Olympics.

The Rio Olympian finished second and fourth to end the round-robin segment of the world championship to sit sixth ahead of Saturday's top-ten medal race in Melbourne.

His performance also consolidated his chances of competing a second Games, with Australia now ensured a quota spot in Japan next year.

"We had a pretty funky northerly wind today which really heated things up for everyone," he said.

"I got on alright and finished with a two and a four so really happy with that in the tricky conditions.

"In the second race a bit of local knowledge came into it and I could felt the change on the cards so I sort of had to go for it a little bit and then consolidate for the rest of the race."

New Zealand's Josh Junior still leads from Dutch sailor Nicholas Heiner and Hungarian Zsombor Berecz.
