Vic Super netballers wait on travel plans

3 minute read

The Melbourne Vixens and Collingwood Magpies are waiting for Super Netball to decide on when and where they will relocate to in order to start the season.

Super Netball's two Victorian clubs are anxiously waiting on relocation plans to get the season underway next month.

The initial season start date was pushed back from May 2 to August 1 due to the coronavirus with officials hopeful they could get a clear run.

But a dramatic spike in Melbourne has locked down the city for six weeks and closed borders with all states.

Super Netball is now scrambling to work out when to shift the Melbourne Vixens and Collingwood Magpies and where to.

League officials and clubs will hold a meeting on Friday when they hope to nut out the draw for the first three rounds and decide travel details for the two outfits.

The most likely move is that Super Netball will apply to the NSW government for border exemptions, which means they can go into camp in NSW without having to spend 14 days in isolation.

Victoria's three stranded A-League teams are awaiting the same approval to get their own competition back in play while Victorian AFL clubs, the Storm NRL side and the Melbourne Rebels have all shifted interstate.

Netballers are understood to be feeling uneasy about relocating away from families and other commitments for an extended period.

But after already taking a 70 per cent pay cut, which was reduced to 30 per cent late last month, they are aware of the financial impact of not playing at all this season.

Meanwhile, Netball Australia has announced an independent review into the game to be headed by former Test star Liz Ellis.

The "State of the Game" review will be undertaken by Ellis and a panel of industry leaders with an idea of future-proofing the game following the coronavirus.
