Highlights from September 24 - day 10 of the Sydney Olympics.

WHAT HAPPENED ON SEPTEMBER 24, 2000 - DAY 10 OF THE SYDNEY OLYMPICS

Artistic gymnastics - Igors Vihrovs won the first Olympic gold medal for Latvia, when he was victorious in the men's floor exercise, leaving the world champion from 1997 and 1999, Aleksey Nemov, to settle for silver.

Sailing - Australia won a medal in the Tornado for the third successive Games, when Darren Bundock and John Forbes claimed silver. Australia won silver again in 2008, the last time the class was on the Olympic program.

Athletics - Russian Sergey Klyugin won gold in the men's high jump with 2.35m, relegating Cuban world record holder Javier Sotomayor to the silver medal.

Naoko Takahashi from Japan won the women's marathon, with Kerryn McCann the leading Australian in 11th place. McCann would go on to win back-to-back Commonwealth golds in 2002 and 2006.

Rowing - Lesley Thompson-Willie was part of the bronze winning women's eight team. It was her fourth medal. Twelve years later in 2012, the Canadian became the oldest woman to win a rowing medal, when she was 52 years old, claiming silver in the women's eight.

Australia's men won silver in the eights, the second silver for Australia in the event after Mexico 1968. Australia has also won four bronze in the event, but never gold.
