Highlights from September 25 - day 11 of the Sydney Olympics.

WHAT HAPPENED ON SEPTEMBER 25, 2000 - DAY 11 OF THE SYDNEY OLYMPICS

Athletics - Cathy Freeman won the women's 400m, giving Australia its first gold medal in athletics since Debbie Flintoff-King triumphed in the women's 400m hurdles at the 1988 Seoul Games. She became the first athlete to light the Olympic cauldron and win gold at the same Games. She was also the first Indigenous Australian to win an individual Olympic gold medal. Freeman also won the world title in 1997 and 1999.

Tatiana Grigorieva claimed silver in the women's pole vault, becoming the first Australian athlete to win a pole vault medal. In 2008, Steven Hooker won gold in the men's event.

Maria Mutola won the women's 800m - the first and so far, only Olympic gold medal for Mozambique. She had won bronze in Atlanta in 1996. In all Mutola ran at six Olympic Games (1988-2008), making the 800m final five times, the last time aged 36.

Beach volleyball - Kerri Pottharst and Natalie Cook claimed the first and so far only gold medal for Australia in beach volleyball. The pair had won bronze in the sport's Olympic debut in Atlanta 1996.

Softball - Australia claimed the bronze medal in softball, matching its performance from Atlanta 1996. Australia took silver in 2004 and bronze in 2008.
