WHAT HAPPENED ON SEPTEMBER 27, 2000 - DAY 13 OF THE SYDNEY OLYMPICS

Taekwondo - Lauren Burns gave Australia its first - and still only - gold medal in taekwondo by winning the women's under-49kg title. Her victory was the first gold medal in the sport's Olympic debut, coming 15 minutes before the men's under-58kg final.

Tennis - American Venus Williams won gold in the women's singles. It was her first of four Olympic gold medals, a record in the sport she currently shares with her sister Serena.

Athletics - Angelo Taylor (USA) won the men's 400m hurdles, a title he would lose four years later to Felix Sanchez (Dominican Republic) after being eliminated in the semi-final. In 2008 Taylor reclaimed the title before losing it again to Sanchez in 2012.

Cycling - German Jan Ullrich won the men's road race, becoming the first and so far only man to win the Tour de France (1997) and the Olympic road race.
