Pipe Masters suspended after COVID cases

The World Surf League's season-opening events in Hawaii has been suspended after CEO Erik Logan was among multiple staff to test positive for COVID-19.

The World Surf League's season return in Hawaii has been postponed after CEO Erik Logan and other staff tested positive for COVID-19.

The men's Pipe Masters and nearby women's Maui Pro, which was already on hold after a fatal shark attack on a recreational surfer earlier in the week, have both been halted after multiple COVID cases were reported on Saturday.

A host of Australian surfers were competing in both events, but a statement on Saturday said the WSL does not believe any athlete was exposed to the virus after being tested and placed in quarantine.

The events, which are yet to be officially cancelled, had signalled the WSL's return after 12 months because of the pandemic.

"The WSL is committed to prioritising the safety of the athletes, staff and surrounding community above all else, and is working closely and transparently with the Hawaii State Department of Health to determine the path forward," a WSL statement on Saturday read.

"As part of the league's COVID Safety Plan, anyone who has returned a confirmed positive test is self-isolating until they are cleared, and contact tracing protocols have been fully implemented."

Think. Is this a bet you really want to place?
