A shark attack followed by COVID-19 cases among World Surf League staff have stalled Tyler Wright and Sally Fitzgibbons in the Maui Pro semi-finals.

Tyler Wright and Sally Fitzgibbons' tilt at the Maui Pro title is in limbo after the World Surf League series opener was thrown into further turmoil by a COVID-19 outbreak.

Already on hold and contemplating a move after a recreational surfer was killed near the competition venue, the WSL took a further hit on Saturday (AEST) when CEO Erik Logan and other staff tested positive to the virus.

The women's even and men's Pipe Masters, being contested on the nearby Banzai Pipeline, have been postponed but not cancelled with all athletes believed to be virus-free and quarantining as organisers ponder their next move.

Wright and Fitzgibbons had reached the final four at Honolua Bay on Tuesday, Wright scoring a perfect 10 to beat seven-time world champion Stephanie Gilmore in the quarter-final.

The event was set to be shifted, possibly to the North Shore alongside the men, before the WSL confirmed their positive COVID-19 tests on Saturday.

There are still four more days remaining in the tournament window.
